Wine on Tap

When you hear the phrase "on tap" odds are you think of beer 🍺 and not wine 🍷. Wine on tap is a really interesting concept though, so don't dismiss it too quickly!

A keg holds 26.6 bottles of wine and can be re-used hundreds of times. Saving tens of thousands of glass bottles, labels, corks, foil and packaging materials. "Each steel keg put into service eliminates the carbon emissions equal to taking a car off the road for 2 years and saves 2,340 lbs. of trash from the landfill over its lifetime" (A Head for Profits).

If the sustainability of a keg isn't compelling enough, let's consider the quality of the wine itself.

When a bottle of wine is opened, it is immediately exposed to oxygen, changing the profile of the wine. Although there are tools available to slow this process down if you do not drink your entire bottle, it is not possible to completely stop the oxygenation process once the cork is pulled. A keg does not have this problem thanks to the pressurization of gas inside the keg. Ensuring each glass of wine dispensed from the tap will be just as fresh as when the keg was filled.

Now don't expect to find fine wines with any age in a keg but there are some really great wines on tap - give them a taste! Cheers!! 🍷
